Medical register - Apply for registration

You must first be entered in the register of doctors if you subsequently wish to be authorised to work as a doctor or psychotherapist.

The Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians keep a register of doctors for each licensing district. It contains information about the person and professional activity that is important for authorisation.

Note: If you are not resident in the Federal Republic of Germany, you are free to choose the register of doctors.

Prerequisite

You must

  • be licensed as a doctor and
  • submit proof of
    • the completion of specialist medical training or
    • training obtained in another EU Member State in accordance with Directive 2005/36 EC.

To be registered as a psychotherapist, you must

  • be licensed as a psychotherapist and
  • submit a certificate of competence in a psychotherapy procedure recognised by the Joint Federal Committee (behavioural therapy, analytical psychotherapy or depth psychology-based psychotherapy).

Procedure

You must apply in writing to the competent authority for entry in the register of doctors. Once you have submitted the required documents and paid the registration fee, you are entitled to be entered in the register of doctors.

You will then receive written notification that you have been entered in the register of doctors.

  • Birth certificate
  • in the case of name changes, the relevant certificate or extract from the family register
  • Licence to practise medicine
  • Certificate of graduation
  • Certificate of recognition as a specialist or qualification in the psychotherapy guideline procedure
  • Recognition of an acquired speciality, specialisation or additional designation, optional further training or proof of specialist knowledge in accordance with the further training regulations
  • if applicable, a doctorate certificate or proof of the right to use academic degrees or titles
  • if applicable, authorisation certificate to use an academic degree obtained abroad
  • complete proof (e.g. certificates, attestations) of work experience since the state examination
  • current proof (e.g. certificates or attestations) of current employment
  • proof of nationality, if applicable
  • for foreign language documents: a certified translation by a state-recognised translator

The documents must be submitted in the original or as a certified copy.
