Police - applying for the police service

With an apprenticeship or bachelor's degree at the Baden-Württemberg Police, you are choosing a profession that is more exciting and varied than almost any other.

Responsible department

For applicants from Baden-Württemberg, the recruitment advisors at the regional police headquarters are responsible. Which regional police headquarters you need to contact depends on where you live.

For applicants from other federal states, it is the responsible recruitment advisors at the Hochschule für Polizei Baden-Württemberg, Institute for Recruitment.

Prerequisite

General recruitment requirements are:

  • Clean record: no conflict with the law
  • Loyalty to the constitution: support for the free democratic basic order
  • german nationality (exceptions are possible for non-German nationals)
  • Minimum height: 1.60 metres (exceptions are possible in the case of physical fitness)
  • physical fitness
  • BMI (body mass index): between 18 and 27.5

If you do not have German citizenship, an application is possible under the following conditions:

  • You have a good command of your mother tongue, both written and spoken
  • You have a temporary residence permit, an unlimited settlement permit or a permit for permanent residence in the EU
  • You have been legally resident in Germany for at least eight years
  • You are a national of Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, France, Greece, Iraq, Italy, Kosovo, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine or Hungary

There are different requirements for entry into the intermediate or higher police civil service:

Intermediate Police Custody Service:

  • at least an intermediate school-leaving certificate (mittlere Reife or an intermediate school-leaving certificate recognised as equivalent), grade point average at least 3.2
  • higher educational qualification (Fachhochschulreife, Abitur or an educational qualification recognised as equivalent), no minimum grade point average
  • Age of recruitment: 16.5 to 32 years (exceptions are possible)
  • in principle, possession of driving licence class B
    Proof is provided by the driving licence or the test certificate for "accompanied driving from 17"

Senior police officer:

  • higher education qualification (Abitur or Fachhochschulreife, or an education qualification recognised as equivalent), grade point average of at least 3.0
  • Age for recruitment: maximum 33 years (exceptions are possible)
  • in principle, possession of driving licence class B
    Proof is provided by the driving licence or the test certificate for "accompanied driving from 17".

Intermediate police service

  • 30. September for recruitment in March of the following year
  • 31. December for recruitment in September of the following year

Higher police service
