Application for the extension of a driving licence for passenger transportation
The driving licence for passenger transportation is issued for a maximum of five years. You can apply for an extension of the licence for up to five years at a time.
Responsible department
- if you live in an urban district (Stadtkreis): the city council (Stadtverwaltung)
- if you live in a rural district (Landkreis): the regional council office (Landratsamt)

Prerequisite
The requirements for the extension of a driving licence for passenger transportation are:
- Driving licence in check card format
- Minimum age: 21 years (19 years for ambulances)
- Class B driving licence or a corresponding driving licence for two years (one year in case of ambulances).
- In good physical and mental health, sufficiently good eyesight
- Personal reliability (no serious previous convictions and traffic offences)
- In case of taxis, rental cars and ambulances: Local knowledge
Procedure
You must apply for the extension of a driving licence for passenger transportation in writing at the driving licence office of your place of residence. You can obtain the application from there and it is also available for downloading.
Note: You can also make the application at your local authority, as this must confirm the personal data to be submitted. The local authority administration will then forward the documents to the competent body.
Required documents
- Personal identity document or passport
- Driving licence in check card format
- Certificate of Good Conduct
- excerpt from the Central Traffic Register
- Medical certificate concerning eye examination or certificate from an ophthalmologist
You can have this examination carried out- by an ophthalmologist,
- by an occupational health practice
- by an assessment centre for driving suitability
- by a doctor at the local health department or by another doctor from the public administration. An expert opinion or certification is valid for two years.
- Medical suitability certification on a form
There is a form for this certification which doctors possess in most cases. You can have the examination carried out at a medical practice of your choice. On submitting the application, the certification may not be older than one year. - In case of extension beyond the age of 60, a psychological report is also required.
The psychological examination concerns a checking of resilience, reaction time, orientation capacity and concentration ability. The proof takes place by an occupational health report or by a report made by a publicly recognised report centre for driving suitability.
Costs
- For extension: 32.90 euros
- An additional 5.10 euros for application at the local authority
Further costs are connected to obtaining the certificate of good conduct.
